Sunny Weather Means More Outside Time! | Newtown Moms

Although the weather hasn’t reached my ideal temperatures yet, the abundance of sun definitely means more outside time for us! This week has me thinking about all of the places in close proximity for walks. Not going to lie, I love spending time at the park with my daughter, but there are definitely times when I want to do less chasing and more walking. Here are some of my favorite spots in the area. Have another recommendation? Please email [email protected] with it and I’ll add to the post.

Fairfield Hills, Newtown: This is our most frequented spot due to its close proximity to our house and paved path. The path is a little under 3 miles and is relatively easy to navigate with a stroller.

Holcombe Hill, Newtown: Holcombe Hill is part of the Newtown Forest Association and consists of 86 acres of preserved land. The hill sits 830 feet above sea level and is the highest point in Newtown. The views are amazing once you get to the top of the hill and the walk up with tire out any parent and even the most energetic toddler. If you plan to go, use a carrier or let your child walk. The paths are not gravel and not really stroller friendly. You can read more about the Newtown Forest Association and other preserved spots here.

Still River Greenway, Brookfield:This 1.6 mile walk is perfect for strolling through the woods. The best thing about this trail is the fact that you can start and finish it right by Kid’s Kingdom in Brookfield. I like the fact I can get a walk in and then Isabelle can play at the park. As I’ve mentioned before, I am originally from Brookfield and remember when Kids’ Kingdom was being built (I know I’m old). It’s amazing how the park has transformed! You can read more about the Still River Greenway here and the plans for eventually extending it to Danbury.

Tarrywhile Park, Danbury: Tarrywhile Park is another great spot to get out and explore with your little ones this spring. The park offers 4 different trails, including one flat 1 mile loop around Park Pond. There are also gardens in the park and the mansion – so lots to see and explore. You can read more about the park here.

Housatonic Railway Trail, Monroe: This trail is about 3 miles if you walk all the way to Great Hollow Lake and back. It’s easy to navigate with a stroller and we love that if you take the trail the entire way, you end up by a playground near the lake. The trail also offers a lot of shade, with is perfect for those hot summer days when you want to be active outside, but not feel like you’re melting.

There are many more parks listed here in our Resources. Some include playgrounds, while others are for walking/hiking. Know of another great spot? Please share by emailing [email protected]
