Every time the seasons change, I tell myself I’m going to be so organized about it. And every single time… I’m not.
I go to switch out my kids’ clothes thinking it’ll be quick, and suddenly I’m surrounded by piles of things that don’t fit anymore and somehow they grew overnight and I missed it.
With two kids, I always think, I’ll save this for a friend or a family member… or I’ll get around to organizing it later. But instead, it all ends up in a bin in my basement that never gets looked at again.
So this year I am doing things differently. I made a promise to myself this spring: When I swap out their clothes, I’m not just going to move things around like always. I’m going to actually go through everything. No more stuffing bins. No more “I’ll deal with this later.” So this year, I’m doing it differently.
My Simple System for a Seasonal Reset
Instead of just swapping clothes and creating more clutter, I’m actually going through everything as I do it.
Here’s what’s working for me:
1. Take Everything Out
Don’t just grab what obviously doesn’t fit. Kids grow in weird ways, things that fit last month suddenly don’t, and things you forgot about might actually work.
Start fresh so you can really see it all.
2. Sort Into 3 Piles (Keep It Simple)
This has been the biggest game changer for me:
Sell – barely worn, great condition
Donate – still wearable, just more loved
Recycle – stained, ripped, not re-wearable
No “maybe” pile. That’s where things get stuck.
3. Do It Right Away
The key (for me at least) is not letting the piles sit.
Once it’s sorted:
- Put the sell items in a bag ready to go
- Put donation items straight into the car
- Find a textile bin for the rest
4. I’ve Started Doing This With Toys Too
Because the same thing happens there.
So many things they’ve outgrown or just don’t play with anymore—but we hold onto anyway.
It’s been really eye-opening (and honestly a little emotional) realizing how much we keep “just in case.”
