Welcome to 2020’s eleven uninterrupted days of Winter Break! If you’re finding your calendar is light this year (ok maybe non-existent) due to changes in holiday plans, postponed vacations, lack of holiday get-togethers, etc, you’re probably searching for ideas on how to fill the kids’ days during the upcoming week. Here are a 5 ideas to fill your days:
1. Enjoy the Holiday Lights
Take a ride and catch a glimpse of some amazing home light displays in Fairfield County. Each year, 26 homes in Newtown are decorated as part of Newtown Holiday Lights. Jump in your car and drive around town to see all (or select) homes on the two routes. Follow along on Facebook for the official tour route.
2. Purchase Tickets to an Event (most last through 1/3)
Many holiday events continue through the week following Christmas. Here is a list of a few to check out. Please check all websites for last minute updates, as well as COVID-19 protocols.
The Beardsley Zoo – Winter Wonderland Walk
Holiday Express Train Show – Fairfield Museum
Magic of Lights – Toyota Oakdale Theater
Holiday Lights Spectacular – Olde Mystic Village
3. Spend Time Outdoors
Check out our list of local hikes here. Beyond our list, there are also several spots to check out in lower Fairfield County like Earthplace or the Stamford Nature Center, which are very family friendly.
4. Visit a Local Museum or Aquarium
The following museums are open:
EverWonder – Newtown
Stepping Stones – Norwalk
Maritime Center – Norwalk
CT Science Center – Hartford
The Children’s Museum – West Hartford
Kids Play – Torrington
Imagine Nation – Bristol
5. Cook or Bake Up a Storm as a Family
We’re not lacking recipes for fun in the kitchen on this site! So head to either or Recipes page or our Seasonal Resource page for ideas. My personal favorite is our latest post on how to make your own Hot Chocolate Bombs.
