Check Out THE Summer Activity for Baseball Loving Families | Newtown Moms

Nothing says summer quite like baseball. And if you’re like our family, you enjoy baseball games and want to pass on that to your kids. I’m going to go out on a limb here and claim that my husband is in fact the biggest Red Sox fan out there (please no judgement!). And although we love going to a game at Fenway, we’re years away from bringing our 2 1/2 year old to an MLB game. That’s why I was happy to learn about the Collegiate Summer league going on practically right in our backyard.

Now in their 25th Season, the Danbury Westerners are a non-profit dedicated to developing college baseball players during the summer. College baseball players from all over, come to the Danbury area for the summer months to play in The New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL). This league is funded 100% by sponsors in our area and besides developing this talented athletes, the league also provides entertainment for local families during June, July, and early August at Rogers Park Field in Danbury.

This summer, Newtown Moms is proud to partner with the Danbury Westerners for their 25th season. Here’s what I love about the Westerners:

  • The Danbury Westerners is a non-profit that serves the community!

The mission of the Westerners is to provide Major League Baseball-supported summer professional baseball development to college students. While doing so, they are also providing baseball entertainment to the Greater Danbury area. In addition to the 44 games (see schedule below) played over the course of the summer, players also lead a free baseball clinic for children, and make numerous appearances at schools, libraries, hospitals, and senior living facilities.

  • The competition is fierce and the players are future pro-baseball players!

Players come to Danbury from across the country with over 170 former Westerners having been selected for the MLB Draft. In fact, twenty-two Westerners are currently playing in the MLB including Oakland A’s outfielder, Matt Joyce and Colorado Rockies reliever Adam Ottavino.

  • Games are affordable and kids are always FREE!

Kids 15 and under are always free at games and adults pay a modest admission of $5 ($3 for those 65+). Ticket sales go right back to supporting the league and concessions are sold at each game. Make dinner simple, by purchasing concessions at the game and picnicking at Westerner Field at Rogers Park, while you watch the Westerners take on one of their opponents in the NECBL. Prefer to bring your own picnic? That’s ok too!

Lastly, Newtown Moms is hosting a Night Out with the Danbury Westerners on Tuesday July 9th. The Westerners have generously donated 50 tickets, so please RSVP here. I hope you’ll join us!
